A rugby icon since 1923, Rugby News has ceased publication due to changes in advertising support and direction.
The 2013 issues are the last to be printed. It is simply a case of revenue vs costs, the changing times in rugby and the changes in the media landscape.
To put it mildly, I am gutted… not for me, but for that wonderful, much loved man of rugby, Eric Spilsted who asked that I continue Rugby News before he passed away on September 11, 2004.
There is a bright side Eric. The Rugby News name and banner will continue with the Rugby News website: rugbynews.net.au
Before any stick throwing, I would like to make it clear that Rugby News would not have seen its 90th Birthday this year if it hadn’t received the strong and vital advertising/financial support of the Waratahs/NSWRU and the Sydney Rugby Union over a number of years.
Rugby News is currently developing changes to its website for year 2014. First Grade teams will be displayed on the home page in a similar style to issues of Rugby News. And the first place you can look for Saturday’s club rugby results will be rugbynews.net.au
Features appearing in Rugby News will continue on the website.
The support that I have received for the Rugby News website in the last few weeks has been very humbling. My very warm gratitude to you all.
Advice of Rugby News weekly program cessation is provided quickly to inform. There will be more to follow.
To the individuals and companies who supported Rugby News through advertising over the last few years and in 2013…a very big thanks!
Finally, my thanks also to the avid Rugby News readers and subscribers. Many wonderful diehards and lovers of grassroots rugby.
